Boy Scouts were at work Friday in the New River Gorge National Park. They were upgrading several spots to give more access to the disabled.
Scouts with disabilities were among those making this area a place where everyone can enjoy the scenic views and cast a line into Glade Creek to do some fishing.
"I've struggled with doing trails and stuff because there's always like brush and stuff you have to climb over and under," Sean Brame of Yorkhaven, Pennsylvania said. "It's such a pain for me as an amputee and the fact that they're making these type of trails out here it's fantastic for me. And I'm just glad other people will be able to enjoy the nature that I can enjoy today."
Five spots were chosen for the scouts to work on. Picnic areas, campsite, trail head and river access were upgraded, along with the fishing bridge to give people with disabilities an opportunity to reach areas of the national park that they could not previously get to.
"I'm disabled," Chris Kalian of Vancouver, Washington said. "And I feel like this is really cool, because it's hard for me to walk to places and this is like, making it easier for people to get around. I feel like we're showing people that we need to make a change and this is a first step"
The volunteer work was part of the scouts Messengers of Peace service days. The projects are designed to have a big public benefit and beautify the state, with an estimated total economic impact in the millions.
"I had blood poisoning in 2005 and just the amount of help I received from a lot of people," Brame said. "It's a great way for me to give back. To say, 'Here's what you helped build. You helped save my life and here's how I'm repaying it.'"
